Q
What types of things do we want to see at the hackathons?
A
Mobile and web apps that solve for challenges facing American small business owners.
Q
Who can participate?
A
Anyone who’s at least 18 years old. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents—unless you are entering as part of a team that designates a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as team leader. If you’re passionate about using technology to solve the financial problems of America’s small businesses, we want to see you there. Participants can include entrepreneurs, designers, developers, computer scientists, students, anthropologists, artists…you get the point. You can come on your own or invite your friends and come with a team.

Q
Is there a registration fee?
A
Yes, it’s $20 per person in advance, $30 at the door, day-of. But here’s the fun part: registration fees (minus processing fees) go towards the Hackers’ Choice Award prize pot. The Hackers’ Choice Award will be an as-chosen-by-the-audience prize that goes to the participating team that gets the most votes.
Q
Do I need an idea in advance?
A
No. We do have resources available on the website in case you want to dive into the research early. But we will present data and research about the challenges facing small business owners day-of. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and develop ideas on-site. You’re also welcome to form a team on Day 1.
Q
Do I have to be at the hackathon the whole time?
A
Certainly not. But all coding and work related to the SmallBizDev hackathon must be done over the course of the weekend. So, no coding or wireframing before the hackathon begins.
Q
What should I bring?
A
The essentials: laptop with power cord and mobile phone with charger.
Q
What does SmallBizDev provide?
A
You mean besides food and drinks all weekend long? We will provide a comprehensive overview of the problems facing the small business owners you’ll be hacking for. Volunteer expert resources will be available during specific times throughout the weekend to offer assistance.
Q
Any other rules?
A
Comprehensive SmallBizDev hackathon rules can be viewed here. And find our Code of Conduct here.
Q
When are submissions due?
A
All must be completed by 12:30pm local time on Day 2 of a given SmallBizDev hackathon in order to qualify for judging.
Q
What about presenting and judging?
A
Participants will demo their app before a judging panel at the end of the hackathon event. Judges will select winners based on certain enumerated criteria; see complete Hackathon Rules for details. The “Hackers’ Choice” award will be chosen by voting participants and members of the audience at the Hackathon at the time of judging.
